OUR LOCATION – IVANICA NEAR DUBROVNIK

GENERAL

ABOUT IVANICA

Ivanica is the village closest to our villa’s location. Nestled in the valley on top of the mountain, just as you take your first steps into the Herzegovina region of Bosnia. It has not been fortunate enough to have received aid from the UN, not like other regions around Dubrovnik. We have however, seen a huge change in the few years we have been coming here and its simplicity and lovely people are part of its charm.

HOW TO GET HERE BY CAR

HOW TO GET HERE FROM THE DIRECTION OF DUBROVNIK AIRPORT & CAVTAT

Follow the coastal road E80 in the direction of Dubrovnik (right as you leave the airport). Then pass Plat, Mlini and Kupari. Before you reach Dubrovnik there is a large Getro Supermarket sign on the right. As you start to head up the hill there is a road to the right with the sign “Gornji Brgat”.
Turn right. Continue up the hill to the mini roundabout at Brgat. Keep right until you reach the Croatian border. Pass through and head towards the Bosnian border. You will see our villas / apartments sign on your right. Don’t pass through but turn left up an unmade road. Follow up this road and you will come to your accommodation.

NB: On making the left turn onto the unmade road for the first time you need to stop and show your passport, after that pull into the road, stop and a wave at them is usually enough to send you on your way.

HOW TO GET HERE FROM THE DIRECTION OF SPLIT

The directions below are direct, the coastal route is more beautiful if you have a bit more time!

Follow the E65 towards Dubrovnik. Cross the Franjo Tudjman suspension bridge (a good stopping place for photos) and continue until you pass Dubrovnik, heading towards the airport. Drive about 2 km, until you see the sign “Gornji Brgat” on your left (it is just as you turn the corner and lose sight of the sea. If you go passed Getro Supermarket, signs you have gone to far).

Continue up the hill to the mini roundabout at Brgat. Keep right until you reach the Croatian border. Pass through and head towards the Bosnian border. You will see our villa / apartments sign on your right. Don’t pass through but turn left up an un made road. Follow up this road and you will come to your accommodation.

NB: On making the left turn onto the unmade road for the first time you need to stop and show your passport, after that pull into the road, stop, and a wave at them is usually enough to send you on your way.

HOW TO GET HERE FROM THE DIRECTION OF TREBINJE

Take the only road signposted to Dubrovnik which will bring you straight to Ivanica, though there are a few new roundabouts to go round! Pass through the Bosnian border control (if you mention you are staying in the villas / apartments, with a quick point they should be quicker).

Immediately turn right up the unmade road (less then 3 m from the border) and you will come to your villas and apartments.

HOW TO GET HERE FROM THE DIRECTION OF KOTOR & TIVAT

You pass Perast and Risan, following signs for Heceg Novi and Trebinje. As you see a sign for Melini you approach a large roundabout. Here turn right to Trebinje.
Follow the road up the mountain, you will have a €3 road toll to pay. Continue until you come to the Montenegro border control. Pass through and drive to the Bosnian control (a good few miles away). Continue on the mountain road.
You will come to Tuli, here you will find a lovely restaurant on your right, “Old Hercegovina”. It is nice to stop here for food or just a drink. It is a restaurant we recommend and visit a lot. Lovely outside in the summer as cooler in the mountains and warm and cosy inside, with a huge tree trunk in the centre, in the winter. They often have live folk music too.
Follow the road down the mountain to a T – junction, turn left following signs to Dubrovnik, 20 min drive brings you to Ivanica.

Pass through the Bosnian border control, and turn immediately right up an unmade road, do not head down towards the Croatian border control. Your accommodation is a short way up this road.

The journey should take 2 hrs.

Just to mention speed, the last bit of your journey from the T – junction had a low speed on it, there are often police radar controls along there plus free roaming cows!

You can also have a look on google maps.

LOCAL SHOPS

LOCAL SHOPS

Within the village of Ivanica are two restaurants and a local shop called Bonita.

Bonita is small but well stocked. They sell the basics, along with fresh bread, eggs and milk daily.

We tend to do a larger shop on arrival in Bingo supermarket, near Trebinje, followed by a trip to the daily market for fresh produce.
The piazza is great for a coffee and a well-earned break!
Tip: The local bread tends to be a daily purchase and we suggest you buy it in the morning as they tend to run out later on in the day. Milk, tends to be UHT, but fresh can be bought in the larger supermarkets.

There is a shopping area on your left before reaching Mlini ( you will see large billboards advertising Konsum and Lidl ).

*Opening time for Konsum:

– Monday-Saturday:   7.30 a.m. – 9 p.m.
– Sunday:  8 a.m. – 1 p.m.

*Opening time for Lidl:

– Monday-Saturday:   8 a.m. – 9 p.m.
– Sunday:  8 a.m. – 6 p.m.

The new shopping Mall opened in 2015 in Mlini – “SUB city”.

The shopping mall at Mlini has a large Konsum supermarket in the basement. It is very well stocked
with local and international products, bakery, hot cooked dishes and has a good gluten free section.
The upper levels have ATM machines, a pharmacy, clothes shops and a large cosmetic and toy store.
There are a couple of café bars / restaurants inside and outside.
Parking in the underground carpark is free for 2hrs.

*Address:

Stajalište dr. Franje Tuđmana 2a,
20207 Mlini, Croatia

*Opening time for SUB city:

– Monday-Sunday:   9 a.m. – 9 p.m.

Trebinje, in Bosnia, offers very well stocked supermarkets, Bingo and Tropic are open early till late, the daily market is great fun with organic local produce, and significantly cheaper than Croatia.

See under “Things to do” for directions and location.

TIP: The piazza has a lively atmosphere and in summer often has live music to enjoy whilst enjoying a well-earned coffee and pastry!

HEALTH CARE

HEALTH INSURANCE – EU RESIDENTS

If you are EU resident, you are probably familiar with European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). EHIC allows you if you are insured by (or covered by) a statutory social security scheme of the EU to receive medical treatment in Croatia for free or at a reduced cost, if that treatment becomes necessary during your visit.

It is very important to take notice that EHIC covers the costs of medical treatment only with contracting health care providers, which is HZZO in Croatia. If you find yourself in need of medical assistance, ask if your EHIC is going to cover the cost of the treatment when you arrive at doctor’s, because not all ambulances are partnered with HZZO.

To give you a rough orientation where your EHIC will cover the cost, remember the following:

Emergency ambulances have to take you in if there is an emergency and your EHIC is valid there Family practices is your first stop if you have health issues. EHIC is usually valid there, but not all family practices are partnered with HZZO. Look for the big HZZO sticker on the front door. If you’re not sure, ask a nurse or a doctor.
Tourist ambulances are not partnered with HZZO, your EHIC will not work there. Tourist ambulances are common on the islands or outside urban areas.

EHIC isn’t covering it all. It will cover urgent health care if necessary, even urgent health care of chronic or pre-existing diseases, but not if the goal of your trip is medical treatment. Any treatment provided is on the same terms as Croatian nationals. This means that you may have to bear the participation cost if there are any.

EHIC is not travel insurance. Travel insurance will cover most of the costs if anything happens to you, so having one along your EHIC is a must.

You can use this travel insurance page to get a quote: www.absolute-croatia.com/travel-insurance

HEALTH INSURANCE – NON EU RESIDENTS

Citizens of Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein are not covered with EHIC and should have travel insurance before traveling to Dubrovnik and Croatia.

Croatia doesn’t have special agreements with other world countries, so you should purchase travel insurance before taking a trip to Dubrovnik.
