RAVNO TRIP

A dramatic drive, cave visit and a stop for lunch in a winery!

ABOUT CAVE VJETERNICA

Average temperature: 11.6 deg celsius cave length: 7,014m, Tour path: 1,800m.
Highly recommended for anyone keen on nature or just wishing just to cool down as there is very pleasant fresh cool breeze just as you enter.

The visiting section of the cave has large galleries with a footpath from which you can admire stalagmites, stalactites, columns and cascade-like flow-stones. You’re also able to see the blind proteas (white, lizard like fish). The staff are friendly and helpful and made us feel welcome. The caves are worth a visit, especially if you’re passing on your way to Slano or Ston in Croatia.

You can drive by car 40-mins or rent cycles from us and cycle along the old railway track through Jurassic landscape, valleys, vineyards and local villages all the way to the caves and restaurant. If you travel beyond into Croatia, there is a small local border to cross, one where we have never had to wait to pass through!
Travel distance is 38 km.

Restaurants nearby

RESTAURANT & GUESTHOUSE ZAVALA

This restaurant is worth a stop at if you are visiting the caves or heading on to Slano. They have a varied menu and often have a spit roast or BBQ on the go.

It overlooks the valleys and vineyards  in the Jurassic Trebinje mountains.

Sometimes it’s nice to get away from the crowds and find the real Bosnia.

A small monastery is nearby that welcome guests.

Bikes are also available for rental.

For directions please follow the map above.

RESTAURANT & WINERY STANICA – Ravno

This building used to be the Old Railway Station, is now a small hotel and winery steeped in history, with lots of memorabilia and pictures to take you back.

Visit the small but interesting wine cellar, where you will be welcome to try local wines, Zilavka a lovely crisp white, a clear favourite of ours. There’s a large terrace in the garden, with a varied menu and outdoor BBQ.

Be adventurous and visit the above two restaurants by travelling along ‘ The Ciro Trail’ . This is a disused railway track and runs from Dubrovnik to Mostar. Join it here in Ivanica and follow the map below to the caves in Zavala and have a break in the winery Berak, or drive a little further to winery Stanica, Ravno. Just before this restaurant you will see a left-hand turning to beautiful Slano in Croatia. (There is a local border control to pass through, but it’s quiet and we’ve never had to wait.) The distance is 38km from Ivanica to Zavala.
